Your cruise has docked at Piraeus and you’ve got a flight home from Athens Airport (ATH). Here’s how to make that connection smoothly — and why the timing deserves a little planning.
How far is it?
Piraeus is roughly 50 km from Athens Airport. The drive is usually 45–70 minutes, but Athens traffic is unpredictable, especially on weekday mornings when ships disembark and commuters fill the roads. Build in a buffer.
Where cruise ships dock
Piraeus is one of Europe’s busiest passenger ports, with gates numbered E1–E12. Cruise ships use the cruise terminals at the southern end (Terminal A and Terminal B), near gates E11–E12. If someone is collecting you, agree the exact meeting point in advance — the port is large and busy on disembarkation morning. Our drivers meet guests at Gate E11.
Your options
- X96 express bus — runs from the port to the airport 24/7, roughly 1–1.5 hours, very cheap, but with luggage and multiple stops it can be slow and crowded on a cruise morning.
- Metro Line 3 — now runs from Piraeus to the airport in about 60–75 minutes; you may need a change, and there are stairs and crowds with luggage.
- Taxi — door-to-door and quick, but availability at the port can be tight when several ships disembark at once.
- Private transfer — booked in advance, meets you at your gate and goes straight to the airport.

How early should you leave?
For an international flight, leave Piraeus at least 3.5–4 hours before departure: up to 70 minutes for the drive in traffic, then check-in, security and passport control. For a domestic flight you can shave that down a little. If in doubt, go earlier — the airport has plenty of cafés.
