Only have one evening in Athens — a long layover, the night before a cruise, or a quick city stop? Good news: Athens is gorgeous after dark, and you can see a lot in a few hours.
The floodlit Acropolis (from the outside)
The archaeological site closes in the evening, so you won’t go inside at night — but you don’t need to. The Acropolis glows above the city, and the best views come from Areopagus Hill, Filopappou Hill, the Plaka rooftops and the city’s rooftop bars. It’s one of the great night-time sights in Europe.
Mount Lycabettus
Athens’ highest hill gives you a 360° panorama of the floodlit city and, on a clear night, all the way to the sea. You can walk, take the funicular, or drive up — and the view of the Acropolis lit up below is unforgettable.
Syntagma & the Evzones
At Parliament on Syntagma Square, the Evzones (the presidential guard in traditional uniform) perform their slow, ceremonial changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier — on the hour, every hour, including the evening.
Plaka, Monastiraki & dinner
The old neighbourhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki are made for an evening stroll — lantern-lit lanes, tavernas and views up to the Acropolis. Remember that Greeks eat late: dinner from around 9pm is normal, and tavernas stay busy past midnight.
The Athens Riviera
For a different mood, head to the coast at Flisvos Marina on the Athens Riviera — a relaxed seaside promenade of yachts, cafés and restaurants, lovely on a warm evening.
See it all in one evening
If you’d rather not piece it together yourself, the Athens by Night private tour links the highlights in about four hours — the floodlit Acropolis views, Mount Lycabettus, Parliament and the Evzones, the Panathenaic Stadium and Flisvos Marina — with pickup from your hotel, Airbnb or even the Piraeus cruise port (€199 per group). It’s an easy, memorable way to spend a pre-cruise night.
