Navagio — “Shipwreck Beach”, also called Smugglers Cove — is the image that puts Zakynthos on postcards: a rusted freighter half-buried in white sand, ringed by sheer cliffs and impossibly blue water. Here’s how to actually experience it.
Two ways to see it
There are two completely different viewpoints, and they’re not close together:
- The cliff-top viewpoint (near Anafonitria/Volimes, on the island’s north-west) gives you the famous photo looking down into the cove. This is the aerial shot everyone recognises.
- By boat, you see the Shipwreck and its turquoise water up close from the sea. The nearest harbour is Porto Vromi; many boat trips combine the Shipwreck with the glowing Blue Caves further north.
Most people who have the time do both — the view from above and the experience from the water are equally special.
Important: access changes
Navagio sits beneath tall, unstable limestone cliffs. After a landslide in 2018 and subsequent rockfalls, the authorities have at various times restricted the cliff-top platform and limited or banned stepping onto the sand for safety, with the rules changing by season and by official decision. Boats have generally still been allowed to approach the cove for photos even when landing on the beach wasn’t possible.
Because this genuinely fluctuates, don’t assume — check the current status before you travel. When you book a tour with us, we’ll tell you exactly what’s allowed that week so there are no surprises.
Seeing it by boat
Our Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves glass-bottom boat tour (from €25, about 2.5 hours) leaves from Porto Vromi Anafonitria and cruises right up to the Shipwreck for the classic photo from the water, then on to the Blue Caves, White Beach and Maravelia Cave for swim stops. The glass bottom lets you see the seabed along the way.
Prefer to combine the famous overlook and a boat trip in one outing? The full-day North Zakynthos tour takes in the Shipwreck viewpoint, a Blue Caves boat trip, swim stops, a village lunch and the Xigia sulphur beach.
Getting there
Navagio is in the remote north-west of the island, far from the main resorts. From Zakynthos Town, Laganas or Kalamaki it’s roughly a 40–60 minute drive to either Porto Vromi (for boats) or the cliff viewpoint. There’s no convenient public transport, so most visitors drive, join a tour, or pre-book a transfer.
We can arrange a private transfer to the harbour or viewpoint, or pair it with a tour. Message us and we’ll help you plan the day around the current access and the best light.
